Europe’s population is ageing rapidly. This phenomenon opens up countless opportunities for products and services for a ‘silver market’ made up of people who are keen to maintain their quality of life at a high level. The European Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Joint Programme was established to come up with innovative ICT solutions for this market. The Netherlands is proud to host this year’s AAL Forum.

The AAL Forum 2012 is the premier meeting place for Ambient Assisted Living. AAL exists to stimulate innovative ICT-based products that help people grow older in a good and healthy way – at home, on the move and in the workplace. The object of the products is to promote quality of life, independence and participation in mainstream society.

AAL Programme
AAL is a joint European research and development programme to address the
challenges of an ageing population. The programme seeks to strengthen innovation
in Europe by means of information and communication technology (ICT). At the
same time it is contributing to prevention of health problems and controlling or
even reducing the costs of care. Twenty-three countries are participating in the
programme, which runs until the end of 2013. The participating countries are twenty
EU member states plus Norway, Switzerland and Israel. The Netherlands signed up
because the programme is conducive to the maintainability and affordability of longterm care. By operating at European level, the joint programme creates a critical and above all constructive mass of research, development, innovation and production by leveraging technologies.
